Siemens PLM Software Teamcenter Community and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server: A Collaborative Digital Environment For Innovation and Growth

To enable manufacturers to meet the opportunities and challenges of a globalized economy, Siemens PLM Software paired Teamcenter for Community Collaboration 2007 with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS), providing a collaborative digital environment enabling manufacturers to deliver innovative new products to the global marketplace on time and under budget.

By creating a single, familiar environment, Teamcenter for Community Collaboration provides a comprehensive set of collaboration and information management tools, alongside role-based access to engineering data from Teamcenter. This integrated approach, with ready access to familiar Microsoft Office-based productivity applications, enables you to securely leverage your valuable PLM information with the extended value chain and provides an easy and consistent approach to:

  • views of documents, people, workflow tasks
  • information from other systems such as presence data from Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007
  • e-mail, calendars, and contact lists from Microsoft Exchange Server
  • files search, document workflow, and content management

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is a business productivity server that brings information management and access, collaboration, and people-driven processes into the familiar environment where people do their work every day. People benefit from the familiarity and consistency of a single environment for all their information and collaboration tasks that is easy to learn, use, and personalize. SharePoint provides a simplified view of real-time enterprise data to everyone from front-line customer service and operations workers to executive decision makers, so they can take action based on their role and task. Because the data is presented in a SharePoint site, teams can collaborate around a consistent and up-to-date view of Business Intelligence (BI) data so they can have more productive discussion and make more confident decisions. This “BI for the masses” approach extends business data beyond the “expert view” of traditional BI portal sites, such as those in Microsoft Dynamics Business Portal and other business applications, while retaining the value that those systems provide for people in specialized roles.

Teamcenter for Community Collaboration expands the SharePoint environment to PLM, enabling you to securely share and collaborate with product and design data inside and outside your company with all members of your extended value chain, including customers, suppliers, and partners. Specially integrated web parts provide everyone with the ability to view 2D drawings, images, 3D models, & assemblies (through the use Siemens PLM Software’s CAD-neutral JT tools), and connect to and publish from Teamcenter data sources, such as engineering process management, requirements management, project and portfolio management, and more. Specialized applications such as Visual Issues integrate with the SharePoint workflow engine to easily capture issues and route them to the appropriate team members, thereby reducing the time and costs associated with understanding and resolving engineering concerns.

“We use Teamcenter for community collaboration to share engineering data. By using Teamcenter, we expect it to take one-fifth to one-tenth of the operational responding time to share information compared to (a) general purpose tool…The real benefits we expect from Teamcenter for community collaboration is not only cost reductions and faster time to market, but also the creation of best ideas—by enabling more extensive communications among diverse groups including suppliers and customers.”

-Yasuo Sasaki, Monozukuri Division, Hitachi Ltd.

Siemens Teamcenter for Community Collaboration 2007 provides the tools necessary for manufacturers to address key business requirements essential for supporting top-line growth and facilitating cost containment. It helps manufacturers meet the challenges of a globalized economy by fostering innovation at every stage of the product lifecycle and at every level of the value chain.
