Viewing CAE Data Using The JT Format
Recently UGS announced the availability of JT2Go, a lightweight JT format
viewer. JT is the world’s most widely-used data format for product
visualization, collaboration and data sharing between PLM software applications
and it is
supported through an industry initiative known as JT Open. JT Open is an
organization driven by global leaders in the PLM industry that have adopted
the JT format
and have a vested interest in supporting it as a standard. The JT Open program,
as the name implies, is open to commercial manufacturers, independent software
vendors, academic institutions and industry-specific special interest groups
to champion the JT technology foundation, proliferate its usage and sustain
its position as the industry standard for visualization, collaboration and
knowledge exchange. The JT format is CAD neutral and can represent 3D geometry
as faceted or precise data, more information is available at http://www.jtopen.com/technology.
The best part is, this viewer is FREE; you can download it from http://www.jt2go.ugs.com.
This is exciting news for CAE users, both NX Version 3 Scenario for Structures
and I-deas NX Series Version 11m2 have the ability to generate JT files from
their post processors. These files can then be directly viewed, rotated,
zoomed and panned in JT2Go. Because the JT format creates compact files for
viewing, it isn’t a replacement for a full function post processor.
At this time color bars are not supported, expect to see them in future releases.
The JT2Go viewer displays both 2D (tif and cgm) and 3D displays. As part
of the install, you also get a 90 day free trial of the 3D measurement and
3D cross section capabilities.

Exporting JT files from the post processors is easy. Both I-deas NX Series
and NX Scenario postprocessors create What You See Is What You Get JT files,
you set up the display as you want the end user to see it, then export. The
I-deas NX Series JT file is written in a monolithic format, while the NX
Scenario JT file is written as a JT assembly file with components in a subdirectory
of the same name.
For I-deas NX Series, remember that you have to use the I11m2 maintenance
version. The JT export is done from the Visualizer print form.

For NX Scenario, this is done in the File, Export menu while in the Post
Processor.
