Drafting and Dimensional Management Technical Committee News
One of our goals for last year’s PLM World Conference was to establish
a Focus Group to specifically address 3D Dimensional Management issues.
Two essential ingredients for insuring success in any venture of this
nature are great leadership and great support. Our 3D Dimensional Management
Focus Group has been very fortunate to secure both these entities. Norm
Crawford, from Geometric Solutions, volunteered his services to lead
the group. Norm is an energetic proponent of 3D annotation and has generously
shared his knowledge and experience with the PLM user community at past
conferences.

Porting of PowerKIT, Ford Powertrain KBE system
to TCe
PowerKIT (Powertrain Knowledge-based Integrated Toolset) is a KBE system
used at Ford Powertrain to aid in the early design concepting of Engines.
One of the key features of PowerKIT is its capability to quickly create
Parametric concept geometry of various Engine components and sub-systems
in a CAD system (currently I-deas), for performing upfront packaging/clearance
studies, CAE, etc. PowerKIT uses I-deas template part library approach
to create new parts and assemblies.

Got Verification?
Through the years, I’ve come to realize how important an excellent
Toolpath Verification system is. Sure, if you’re making sheet metal
washers, that additional capital will be more difficult to justify. But
in my business, when 7” diameter raw stock costs $200 per inch,
and delivery takes 6 months, mistakes may be insurmountable.

Simulation SIG's NX Review and Evaluation Project
One of the functions of the Simulation SIG is to represent the UGS Simulation
User Community by direct interaction with UGS Program and Development
Managers and the UGS Development Team. With the “Simulation SIG’s
NX Review and Evaluation Project,” we are continuing work during
the 2006 – 2007 period on the first proactive SIG project that
involves detailed product review to assess the availability and functionality
of each new release of the NX product. This year we are focusing on NX
5 and a team of five is in the process of assessing an evaluation version
on our systems in preparation for our project tasks.
