Drafting and Dimensional Management Technical Committee News

One of our goals for last year’s PLM World Conference was to establish a Focus Group to specifically address 3D Dimensional Management issues. Two essential ingredients for insuring success in any venture of this nature are great leadership and great support. Our 3D Dimensional Management Focus Group has been very fortunate to secure both these entities. Norm Crawford, from Geometric Solutions, volunteered his services to lead the group. Norm is an energetic proponent of 3D annotation and has generously shared his knowledge and experience with the PLM user community at past conferences. Debbie Peecher and Jonathon Gray, our UGS representatives, have also actively committed their services to help move us forward and offer great developer support.

The group held their first virtual meeting this last October 5. The meeting included all those attendees who had expressed an interest in being involved by sending their contact information to Norm. For those of you who are interested in joining the next virtual meeting, please send your email address to: ncrawford@GeometricSolutions.net. You will be added to the mailing list and notified of the meeting details, tentatively scheduled for mid-January 2007. We had a great discussion in October about the differences between the Embedded GD & T (SmarTOL) and the new PMI. Debbie also demonstrated more of the 3D GD & T capabilities in NX4, answering a lot of ‘how-to’ questions. The ‘virtual meeting’ format worked well and everyone who attended got a lot out of it. Debbie and Jonathon have both been great examples of the phenomenal commitment by the UGS software development team to implement advanced GD & T capabilities in the annotation package. Other members of the development team, too numerous to list here, have been instrumental in shaping this tool.

One of the primary objectives of our technical committee is to help the User optimize use of the product and to help UGS provide the most efficient and effective tool. To accomplish this, we need to hear from the user. The PLM World Conference is a great place to get everyone together. We had some outstanding presentations last year that generated some great dialogue and valuable technical exchanges for both users and developers.

Please consider making a presentation at next year’s conference coming up in April 2007. Abstract submission deadline is December 15. Some Drafting and Dimensional Management topics that have generated a lot of interest include:

  • Best Practices/experiences for checking 3D models and associated 2D drawings
  • Application of 3D annotation and associated GD & T capabilities
  • General drafting best practices
  • Setting up policies and procedures to incorporate annotation best practices

If you have experience in any of these areas or have other topics of interest, we hope to hear about them as you share your successes with the rest of the user community at next year’s conference.
